A special jungle Christmas with special people

I was his secret Santa. Robin is half Nepali volunteering at Maya Universe Academy for 5 months. He’s taken the role of handyman (amongst others) but loves fixing things. Following the nickname I gave him Mr Fix It it was appropriate to get him his very own tool box!

Sapana is a hostel girl who came to Maya with her mother who used to work with us taking care of our animals until she recently got married. Sapana is staying at Maya hostel and will continue to receive education there.

Sunil, one of the youngest hostel boys at Maya was my secret Santa. I received beautiful earrings from him. This is him opening his gift from a volunteer with unforgettable excitement in his eyes as he unwrapped his parcel.

Christmas Eve dinner – a super team effort by all which included fresh orange juice, samosa, prawn crackers, raw veg salad, Spanish spinach croquettes, dal bhat with chicken curry, veg curry with wild coriander, pancakes and apple crumble. We danced the night away.

Finding a home away from home makes me feel like such a lucky person. I think this is the same for all our hostel kids too. A place where we feel comfortable in our own skin, with people we trust. A place where we can eat and sleep and learn.

Best wishes everyone from Maya X
